Herban Lifestyle Store Grand Opening, Feb 8th!

At the end of November, we moved into a large studio space in the Merrifield neighborhood of Fairfax. The space has a showroom in the front, which we have turned into the Herban Lifestyle Store! To celebrate our new space, we are hosting a Grand Opening on February 8, 2014 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. We will have food & beverages (including delicious treats from Thunder Pig Confectionary and Momme Meals), samples, product-making demo, discounts and a drawing to win a free DIY kit! For more information, check out our Eventbrite invitation or Facebook Event Page.

At the store, customers can see and sniff our entire line and learn about the various organic and Fair Trade ingredients that go into them. The store also serves as a gathering spot for people to share practical ideas about sustainability, self-sufficiency, creative reuse, and safer products. You are welcome to join events or use hands-on resources at the store, including:

• Workshops where you can learn how to make your own truly natural personal care and household products, as well as other green crafting techniques, including a Couple’s Valentine Craft Night on February 12 and Make Your Own Organic Spa Products on February 19.

• A learning library for those of you who want to make your own bath and body products, plus a variety of USDA Certified Organic and Fair Trade Certified ingredients and sustainable packaging.

Fab Faux Ticket Giveaway: May 22nd DC Concert

[Note: It is 12:00am on May 21st, and I have closed out the giveaway contest. A winner was chosen using the random number generator at random.org. Congratulations, Amanda Kozlowski!]

When I was a kid, I had a music teacher who was a hardcore Beatles fan. He taught us everything he new about the music and history of Beatles. Learning about the evolution of their work and their world views, and listening to their timeless music made me wish I had been born at a time when I could have witnessed Beatlemania firsthand. So I was thrilled when a family friend (another huge Beatles fan) offered to take me and a friend to see Beatlemania on Broadway. It allowed me to pretend that I was back in the 1960s witnessing an intimate concert by the Fab Four.

And when I was asked if I would be willing to spread the word about a DC appearance by The Fab Faux this weekend, I was eager to learn more about them. I found out that the group is comprised of seasoned musicians who are dedicated to “faithfully recreating some of the most extraordinary music ever written.” As they explained in an interview for NPR, they are a “’Beatles records’ tribute band” in that they don’t try to look or act like the originals, but rather work on accurately recreating the Beatles’ later studio pieces.

The members of Fab Faux are: Will Lee of Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Vivino, formerly of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, Rich Pagano, who has performed with Rosanne Cash and Ray Davies, Jack Petruzzelli, who has toured and recorded with Joan Osborne, Patti Smith and Rufus Wainwright, and Frank Agnello, who has worked with Phoebe Snow and Marshall Crenshaw.

Over the past decade of performing together, the group has amassed an impressive resume: they celebrated their 10th Anniversary with a sold-out concert at Radio City Music Hall; and in 2007, they commemorated the 43rd Anniversary of The Beatles’ performance on The Ed Sullivan Show with an appearance on Late Show with David Letterman (which films in the Ed Sullivan Theatre).

For the fourth year in a row, The Fab Faux will appear in Washington, D.C. at The George Washington University Lisner Auditorium. They will be joined by Crème Tangerine Strings and Hogshead Horns. The concert will be held at on Saturday, May 22, 8:00pm.

A marketing firm for the Fab Faux has offered a free pair tickets to the show for my readers. To enter, just leave one comment on this post with your name and an email address where I can easily contact you (I suggest that you use [at] instead @ to protect your mailbox from spammers). The deadline to enter is 11:59pm EST on Thursday, May 20th. A winner will be chosen by random number generator, and will be announced on Friday, May 21st. The winner can claim his/her tickets at will call.

For more information on the concert, please visit the Lisner Auditorium website. Tickets can be purchased at Tickemaster or by calling 202-397 SEAT. And to learn more about the Fab Faux, I suggest you check out their very groovy website.

Always Look on The Bright Side!

brightsideHerban Lifestyle is featured this month in The Bright Side Project! The Bright Side Project was started by Miss B and Miss K as a way of bringing a bit of sunshine into people’s lives. And the lovely design, upbeat clever writing, and generous giveaways on their website do just that!

Every month since the site was established (last March), the creators have established a theme. They then feature a different designer each day whose work fits within that them. The designer offers a prize, which goes to the lucky reader who comes up with the best answer to a question posed by the designer.

This month’s theme is “Beauty Full!” And every day throughout July, The Bright Side Project will be giving away items “that celebrate, promote, and reflect the beauty in you and in life.” Winners are announced every Wednesday. And, for our part, Herban Lifestyle will be giving away one gift set.

For a chance to win an Herban Lifestyle gift set, simply answer the question “What is your super power, or what do you wish it was?”

Cranberry Fig fragrance
Cranberry Fig fragrance

One of my wholesale customers recently requested a large soap order. Although I have crafted soaps in the past, I told her that I only work with melt & pour — I don’t have the desire or confidence to work with lye. She didn’t mind — her only stipulation was that the product had to be 100% natural, organic if possible. In looking around, I found that Bramble Berry Soapmaking Supplies offers an organic M&P base.

I was very happy with the quality of the soap base when it arrived. They included free samples of one of their fragrances, Cranberry Fig, which was meant as a nice gesture. However, I never use fragrances in my products, so have no use for these. I feel it would be a shame to throw them away, though. So, I am offering one bottle of this fragrance to each of the first two people who email me (info at herbanlifestyle dot com).
